⚘𐂷⚘ RAKOV ŠKOCJAN NATIONAL PARK ⚘𐂷⚘

Rakov Škocjan is a wonderfully wild karst vallev at the northern base of the Javorniki hills which was created when the ceiling of a karst cave began sinking and collapsing. Limestone, a relatively resilient rock, possesses the peculiar trait of being soluble in water. Rainwater infiltrates through the resulting cracks, gradually dissolving the rock along its path. Over time, as underground streams flow, tunnels and chambers slowly form. This created the maginificant two natural bridges: Little Natural Bridge (Mali naravni most) and about 2.5 kilometres (1.6 m) downstream, to the west, Big Natural Bridge (Veliki naravni most). It was formed by Rak river, which springs from Zelške caves on one end, runs on the surface for 3.5 km and then goes underground again in Tkalca cave on the other end of the valley. Above the valley, in the vicinity of Big Natural Bridge, stand the ruins of St. Cantianus's Church, built in the early 17th century in the late Gothic style. The whole area is packed with karst phenomena, and a route with educational boards runs through the valley. This area is also an Iron Age archaeological site.
